Chapter 18

Crimson left Nyla resting, her exhaustion clear despite her attempts to put on a brave face. He had promised to take her to visit Sasha later, once she felt stronger. For now, his focus shifted to Coral’s home, where pressing matters drew him.

The air inside the den was warm and inviting, the earthy scent of aged wood mingling with the faint aroma of coffee. Noah sat on the plush leather sofa, his casual demeanor masking an undercurrent of tension. As Crimson stepped inside, Noah’s face lit up, his broad smile breaking through the charged atmosphere.

“It’s good to see you,” Noah said, rising and slapping Crimson on the back in greeting. “You’re looking fit. The time away did you good.”

“It did indeed,” Crimson replied, a faint smile curving his lips as he stepped back. “Everything okay?”

Noah glanced toward Coral, his expression faltering for a moment before he nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, we’re good, but—”

Crimson raised a hand, halting Noah mid-sentence. Tilting his head slightly, his sharp gaze locked onto Coral. “Why does he smell like you?” he asked, suspicion edging his voice.

Coral’s face reddened, his usual composure slipping. Noah burst into laughter.

“Am I laughing?” Crimson asked, his tone flat, his eyes narrowing.

“No, asshole,” Noah replied, still chuckling. “Coral’s my brother.”

Shock rippled through Crimson like a thunderclap. “Brothers?” he repeated, his voice tinged with disbelief. His eyes darted between them, noting their starkly different features.

Coral nodded, his expression unreadable.

“You didn’t tell me,” Crimson said, his voice quieter now, but no less sharp.

“It’s no one’s business,” Noah said, his laughter fading as he returned to his seat.

Crimson’s beast stirred uneasily, running a rapid, almost primal analysis of every past interaction with Noah and Coral. It sifted through memories, searching for inconsistencies, signs of disloyalty, or potential danger. Crimson stood motionless longer than he realized, his penetrating stare unnerving even Noah, who exchanged a glance with Coral.

“What the hell was that?” Noah asked, breaking the silence.

“Just this thing he does,” Crimson replied dismissively, not eager to explain the peculiarities of his beast. “Why didn’t you tell me?” he asked Coral, his tone softening but still pointed.

Coral shrugged. “Noah and I weren’t speaking when I met you. Our reconciliation is relatively new.”

“You didn’t have to explain that to him,” Noah muttered, waving a hand as he sank further into the sofa.

Crimson shifted the conversation. “You wanted to see me?”

Noah nodded, his tone turning serious. “Yeah. If Onyx hasn’t already, he’s going to challenge you to lead the Gatekeepers. While you were away, he drummed up support to ban private treasuries, making them public. Some younger dragons are struggling to find treasure and don’t want to serve older dragons, so they’re backing him.”

“Not all of them,” Crimson countered, thinking of the trainees who had eagerly petitioned to join his thunder the moment Hugo announced the openings.

“Onyx’s greed and need for power will ruin him. He’s not as concerned about others as he claims. The enclave needs changes, I agree with that, but I’m not giving any of my sons’ or their sons’ treasuries to anyone.
